The Case for Neutrals: A Designer's Perspective
While dark upholstery can be a practical choice for many, there's something undeniably elegant and inviting about neutrals. The soft tones and luxurious textures can instantly elevate a space, creating a sense of sophistication and refinement.
Here are a few reasons why I'm a fan of neutrals
Visual Appeal: Light colors can make a room feel larger and brighter, while also adding a touch of luxury.
Versatility: Light upholstery pairs well with a variety of design styles, from modern to traditional.
Timeless Elegance: Classic fabrics like linen and cotton in light shades are timeless and can be easily incorporated into any space.
But what about durability? While it's true that light upholstery can show stains or wear more easily than darker colors, there are ways to mitigate these concerns:
Choose Durable Fabrics: Opt for fabrics like performance fabrics, microfiber, or linen blends that are resistant to stains and wear.
Use Protective Covers: Consider using removable covers on high-traffic areas like sofas and chairs to protect the upholstery.
Regular Cleaning: Regular cleaning and maintenance can help keep your light upholstery looking its best.
As a designer, I am drawn towards the tonality and elevated appeal. Here are some of my favorites. You may not need to do an entire space in the vibe, but light spots in a space draw the eye in if you want to sprinkle in some neutral to your home.
If you're hesitant to commit to an entire room of light upholstery, consider incorporating it into smaller accents:
Throw pillows
Ottomans
Vases & Objects
Rug
By carefully selecting fabrics and incorporating protective measures, you can enjoy the beauty and elegance of light upholstery without sacrificing durability.
